Read/Write Webhttp://www.readwriteweb.com [Read/Write Web] In the third and final part of my series of ZDNet columns about Yellowikis as a Web 2.0 case study, I look at some of the design principles that can be applied by other Web 2.0 companies and services.

In Part 2 I took a more critical look at Yellowikis and the business realities it faces. (via Cosmos)

While targeting the yellow pages industry first and foremost their home page sees their mission as being "Yellow Pages (http://www.yellowpages.com), Dun and Bradstreet (http://www.dnb.com/us/) and Hoovers rolled into one - but open, free to both companies and users, global, multilingual and a lot more ecologically friendly." When Paul's daughter had an entry into Wikipedia rejected because it was not considered encyclopedic by the peer reviewers the light bulb went off in Paul's head. (via Cosmos)

That, and they’ll follow any lead.

Readwriteweb.comhttp://www.readwriteweb.com [Readwriteweb.com] Read/Write Web: Yesterday produced an example of what I consider a poor R/WW post: Gawker Strikes Deal With Yahoo.Admittedly it was a rushed post, because I had other things to do, but that's noexcuse for not doing more groundwork and analysis before I posted it. Bycontrast, later that day I saw an excellent post by Mike Arrington from TechCrunchon the same topic: Is the Gawker-Yahoo Deal Important?Mike's post pointed out something that I would have known had I done moregroundwork, that Yahoo is not actually linking through to Gawker sites.

After all, almost every ad banner served is a "mashup", with DoubleClick or equivalent site cooperating seamlessly with the target site to deliver content from yet another site.) EBay is a long tail company because it set up a system, again with customer self service and powerful algorithms, enabling a thriving marketplace among players who were formerly marginal in the high touch economic systems that eBay replaced.
