[Walking with Web 2.0] It's a Wonderful Wiki World!! « Walking with Web 2.0: Considering how negative teachers in my school are about students using Wikipedia I was pleasantly surprised when I was researching that I could find very few recent articles that put Wikipedia in a negative light. I wonder if as Badke suggests in his article What do to with Wikipedia the reason is because “Wikipedia is an affront to academia because it undercuts what makes academics the elite in society.” Wikipedia is created by “everyman” and yes, that does mean that mistakes and inaccuracies do occur but instead of pretending that students arent using it we need to teach students to read information critically. Wikipedia itself cautions users by telling them that the information may be biased or inaccurate. Im not saying I want my student quoting Wikipedia as an authoritative source but why not let them start there when they begin their research. We are kidding ourselves if we think they arent doing that anyway.

Smith ignores the fact that this experiment conducted by a teenager was not subjected to the rigorous methods that are inherent to the scientific process.
