Gawping at Flickr Upcoming

[Preoccupations] I blog it because the value of this to anyone involved in education is immense and the achievement it represents (on the part of Flickr and Upcoming staff, but also, of course, the user communities) is the kind of stuff about which we should be telling our students ”” the next generation of innovators and co-creators.

Skypecasting blogs, wikis and blended learning

[Musings about Social Computing and Ed. Tech.] The following evening I was able to attend another excellent skypecast hosted by Steve Hargadon with Vicky Davis (Coolcat Blog) and Adam Frey (Wikispaces) about wikis in education. Vicky has her high school students creating amazing wikis in her program - check out the wiki they are creating about Online safety practices.

Enterprise 2.0 vs. Wikipedia: The Sequel

[Enterprise Web 2.0] The battle to keep alive the second nomination of Enterprise 2.0 for inclusion in Wikipedia rages on over on the Articles for Deletion page where embattled WP regulars have circled the wagons against outside intruders with new ideas.  Oh, well.  Democracy is messy.  Since the opinions of frequent contributors are more heavily weighted than those of us drive-by “sock puppets,” (their words, not mine) I am not optimistic.  I just posted some thoughts there in support of Andrew Mcafee’s position that the argument should not be about the label Enterprise 2.0 but about the new developments that are involved.  Here’s what I wrote:

TechCrunch Auctions Hard-to-Get Party Tickets for Charity

[Greg Cohn’s Weblog] I love it when my interests cross:  going for over $500 at auction are two tickets to a totally free Silicon Valley party thrown by web2.0 uber-tastemaker Michael Arrington that “sold” out in, like, 15 minutes.  Proceeds are going to a charity, the Entrepreneurs Foundation, which I’d never heard of before but quite like the charter of.  Go TechCrunch!

Way Behind The Curve

[AssortedStuff] Way Behind The Curve August 15th, 2006 Not that I didn’t know this already, but I’m just not cool. At least according to Time magazine. They’ve published their list of the 50 Coolest Websites and there’s only two that I visit on a regular basis at all: YouTube and Digg. The editors also declare that “Many of this year’s choices are shining examples of Web 2.0.” Which means I also don’t understand the concept of Web 2.0. Most of these sites are only tangentially related to helping the average person post their ideas to the web. Instead Time’s list is made up of entertainment or marketing sites that are decidedly read-only. And as far as cool goes”¦ Google Spreadsheets? Snack attack

[Emerging Media News] Websites that share video clips are revolutionising our viewing habits. Every day more than 100 million video clips are watched at the video-sharing website YouTube, answering one of broadcast television’s most compelling questions: where have audiences, when they’re not busy downloading pirated TV shows or watching DVDs, actually gone?
